It is official- Joe Biden confirmed yesterday that Kamala Harris will be his Vice Presidential nominee. Harris is a former prosecutor and currently serves as a California Senator. In a tweet yesterday, Biden said that it is a ”great honor to announce Kamala Harris—— a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest servants—- as my running mate.” In a retweet, Harris added that ”Biden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
A few notable facts about Senator Harris:
1) If elected, she would be America’s first female, Asian, and African American Vice President—- she claims Indian heritage from her mother’s side of the family, and Jamaician heritage from her father’s side of the family.
2) For fourteen years (1990-2004), Harris worked as a district attorney in California, where she eventually became a prosecutor.
3) From 2011-2017, she was California’s Attorney General.
In terms of policy, Harris will have significant influence on Biden’s campaign. She has spent her life fighting civil rights, and has experience serving on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Select Committee of Intelligence, the Committee on the Judiciary, and the Committee on the Budget. Combined with Biden’s experience as a long time Senator and Vice President, the ticket is appealing to Democrats and Independents, and even Americans who feel Trump is not doing the best job.
